Weiss begins DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park

On Monday afternoon, Ricky Weiss returned to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) to compete in a stout field of 51 Late Models for the 50th annual DIRTcar Nationals. Transferring the Top 3 from the heats, Weiss posted a sixth place finish, transferring him into the B-Main for another shot at the opening night feature. Needing to place second or better, Ricky logged a fifth-place outing.

For another $7,000-to-win A-Main on Tuesday, Ricky followed up the second fastest lap in his time trial group with a runner-up finish in his heat behind Brandon Sheppard. Passing four cars in the 30-lap feature, Weiss scored an eighth-place finish. (Jacy Norgaard photo)

In a field of 51 cars on Wednesday night as the remainder of the weekend shifted under the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series banner, Weiss shot out to an early race lead in his heat but a caution dropped him back to fourth. Picking up a 10-lap consolation victory over Tony Jackson Jr., Ricky earned the 20th-starting position for the feature. Wheeling his way into the Top-10, Weiss marched forward 11 spots to finish ninth.

The following night, Ricky grabbed the third and final transfer spot in his heat, which positioned him 17th on the starting grid for the A-Main. With $10,000 on the line, Weiss passed 10 cars in the 40-lapper to register a seventh-place finish.

With the field reduced to 38 cars on Friday evening, Weiss followed up a sixth place finish in his heat with a runner-up spot in his B-Main behind Josh Richards. Starting the $10,000-to-win A-Main in 20th, Ricky made hard contact with the wall with five laps remaining that brought a disappointing end to his night.

Persistent rain overnight on Friday wiped out Saturday night’s finale.

Ricky is currently in third in the lastest World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series point standings.
